When I picked this book up it was after several "Pratchettless" years. Having previously become rather bored with the style of his books I hoped that the break would leave me refreshed and ready to re-experience the Pratchett style. Initially I enjoyed "Elephant" and found the comic ideas amusing. However, after a few hundred pages I started to get bored again. I don’t know if it is down to age or the fact that my reading preferences have changed but I found the formulaic style quite irritating. OK, there is nothing wrong with the book and I wouldn’t like to incur the wrath of the many Pratchett fans by suggesting that there was, but personally I did not feel the need to turn the next page to find out what was going to happen. This, for me, is essential when reading a book. Seeing as I only have a limited time available for reading I decided that it would be better spent on another. So, after about a third of the book I gave up! I am sure that many other people will thoroughly enjoy this novel but I’m afraid I didn’t. |
