Esther Diamond is an actress but like so many others she has yet to make it big. Instead she is currently on stage in an off-Broadway show prancing around half naked as a nymph and understudying the main female lead – Golly Gee (a b-list pop star). As the show was the story of a stage magician it came as no surprise when Golly entered the crystal cage and disappeared in a puff of smoke. However both cast and audience were shocked when she failed to reappear – at all.

But, the show must go on and Esther finds herself rehearsing to take over in the lead role – that is until she receives a mysterious note telling her not to go into the cage if she valued her life. The police investigate Golly's disappearance but do not take the notes seriously as they believe that they are part of a plan to gain publicity for the show so Esther, along with a few friends decides to find out what is really going on. As more people (and a cow) disappear they realise that time is of the essence if they are to discover the truth.

Disappearing Nightly is the latest book by Laura Resnick and follows a struggling actress as she delves into the world of the supernatural to discover why a young woman has disappeared on stage. It is a superbly funny tale with the main character getting herself into some truly unusual situations. The writing style is very tongue-in-cheek and the supporting cast of characters is one of the most varied I have ever read.

This is an extremely entertaining story that keeps you chuckling from start to finish and I hope that we hear more about Esther Diamond in future stories.

Synopsis
I'm not a heroine - I just play one. Along with psychotics, vamps, housewives and hookers. As my agent is fond of pointing out, there are more actors in New York than there are people in most other cities. Translation: beggars can't be choosers.

This explains how I wound up prancing around stage half naked the night Golly Gee - the female lead in the off-Broadway show "Sorceror!" - disappeared into thin air. Literally.

Now other performers are also vanishing, and a mysterious stranger is warning me: There is evil among us.

But the producers want me to take over Golly's part.

Looks as if I'm going to need a little magical help if I want to keep my starring role….
