If it were not for the name on the front of this book I most certainly would never have picked this book up, never mind paying a premium for an autographed copy on eBay. But given that this is a Mike Resnick book, even the fact that it is a straight crime novel featuring a Private Investigator investigating the disappearance of a dog, would not prevent me from wanting read it. Resnick's easy to read style have had me hooked for years now, so the chance to read another novel is simply too good to miss. Hey, I even read his Lara Croft novel.

Eli Paxton, the PI in the book, is visited by a potential new client – a dog handler who has "lost" one of his charges, a Weimaraner called Baroness von Tannelwald which had been Best-in-Show at the Westminster Dog Show. The dog's owner is threatening him with a law suit and so he hires Paxton to trace the dog.

Now I fully understand that this book will hold little appeal to many science fiction fans. As I said, I would be amongst them were it not a Resnick book. But I can also imagine that anyone who has read and enjoyed Resnick would be more than pleased to be reading this book.

Resnick knows his stuff here – he used to run a highly successful kennel himself so knows the world of professional dog-breeding and shows. And that knowledge and understanding shows. But this is more than just the guy showing off his background knowledge of the dog-world. This is an intriguing crime novel, very absorbing and written in the same easy to read style of his sf novels.

I had a great time with this book, and although it is not the easiest book get hold of, I would recommend that if you are a Resnick fan, and see this on the shelf in a store somewhere you could do a lot worse.
