In a future where most animals have been removed from the earth - an earth now covered by vast soya bean farms to feed the enormous human population - the polar park has been established. Here animals are being genetically engineered by the big companies to fit the conditions. And all is being done in the name of conservation. Given that the feeling of this book is along the lines of Philip K. Dick at his most paranoid there's got to be more to it than that. When the three soldiers guarding the scientists responsible for engineering the animals and algae in this project are killed without any sign of outside interference, paranoia begins to take over - the scientists becoming suspicious of each other's every action, believing it to be due to hidden motives. This story really plays on the nerves. The people are placed in what is still a fairly hostile environment for humans and then subjected to doubt and fear. Add the fact that they are now armed and everyone becomes suspicious of their colleagues, and of the motives of the corporations they work for. This book will appeal to any fan of Philip K. Dick or of futuristic conspiracy led SF. There is seemingly no light at the end of this tunnel. |
