There is no room in heaven for sins, especially one of the seven deadly ones as angel Valarie Grace discovers when she finds herself falling from the sky, kicked out of heaven and into the whale tank at Niagra Falls for being proud. Guided by a note left in the wallet Heaven provided for her, she finds work at the Paradise Inn and spend the next two months adjusting to human life, making friends, and watching TV to learn how to be a normal person. Then, her state of woebegone ennui is upended. First, the Tempter she was warned would come after her shows up, and Nathaniel certainly fits the job description. Then, she learns she is not the only fallen angel in town, and her compatriot has been given the Key to Heaven, but a far more evil demon than Nathaniel stole it from him. Now, Valarie must go to the Underworld and try to get the Key back before it can be used to stage an invasion of the celestial city by hordes of demons. Her only allies are Nathaniel, who has been bound to her by a spell, and Reggie, a charming, or so he thinks, rogue who has recently been turned into a talking rat. Valarie is undertaking the adventure of the ages, but perhaps equally important, a journey to discover what she is made of, and what love means. Take a romantic comedy, a little bit of Time Bandits, and a hint of C.S. Lewis perhaps, and you have the recipe for this fun read. Valerie is a sympathetic heroine who will help readers learn a little about themselves as well as even her best motives turn out to be less than she thought, but her worst moments are not as bad as she thinks. The supporting characters almost take the show away from her and Nathaniel, though. Reggie is a delight, whether as a rodent or a man. If life is getting too serious, then this is the prescription for laughter. |
