A knight under an assumed name arrives at Corbenic, home of Elaine, her semi-mad father, and problematic brothers. He asks to wear her favor in a tournament, then finds succor in her home after he is injured in the contest. Little do they guess until much time has passed that the stranger is Lancelot, the greatest of all Arthur's knights, and one bound by mystic ties to the Lady of the Lake.

By the time the truth is known, he and Elaine are in love, but she has heard the rumors about him and the Queen. Doubt riddles her love, so that when he returns to court, Lancelot does not know that she is to have his child. Months later, when they meet again in Camelot, the gossip is almost too much to bear, and there is a grain of truth to it, but not what Elaine and everyone else thinks. It is not Guinevere Elaine should worry about, but Morgause.

Much of what is presented here will be very familiar, especially if you have read the Once and Future King. However, there is just enough of a twist to change things and give the reader a surprisingly joyful ending. Magic is not an overwhelming factor in this spin on the Arthur legend, but it does add a critical element. However, even historical romance purists should not miss a good story because they, to quote a good friend who hates fantasy, "do not like that stuff".

Synopsis
