Goblet of Fire is the 4th novel in the Harry Potter series and is certainly the most gritty. The basic storyline is that there is to be a wizard tournament between the 3 main wizard schools, Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The best student will be selected from each school to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. Names of all qualifying students are placed in the Goblet of Fire which then selects the student most qualified to represent their school. Needless to say things don't go exactly to plan. All the usual characters are present and there are more than a few surprises in store for Harry, Ron and Hermione. Needless to say, "You-Know-Who" makes an unwelcome appearance, his involvement ultimately resulting in the death of one of the students. This story forces the main characters to address a number of issues including racial prejudice and it is good to find a children's book that isn't afraid to face this kind of subject. |
