Although this is a chidren’s book we thought that considering the recent epidemic of potter-mania we really should read and review these recent additions to the fantasy stable.

I think that from start to finish, this book took me around 4 hours to read and was thoroughly enjoyable. OK, so the storyline is very obviously aimed at children but the writing style does not feel that way. There are some excellent character descriptions and a plot that twists and turns throughout.

Harry Potter himself is a main character that a lot of young people will identify with. A little out of place because of his second-hand clothing and difficult family life he nevertheless wins through in the end. And no, I haven’t spoilt the plot – if Harry didn’t win the day there wouldn’t be any more books available in the series!

For parents looking for a good book to give to their children I can highly recommend Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. There is nothing in it to cause offence or upset anyone. It is, in my opinion, very child-friendly and it’s basic underlying theme of "outsider makes good" is an excellent message to give out. Just because you are different it doesn’t mean you are any less worthy.

Considering this as a book aimed at children I would definitely give it a 9/10.
