This is a companion piece to C.L. Moore's story 'Vintage Season' rather than a sequel. Characters from Moore's tale take part in this tale but are very much on the periphery of the action here. Silverberg tells his own story woven around the first novella in this volume. He investigates the rules of being a time-travelling tourist. Interaction with the locals is on a simple basis, look but don't touch. Involvement, on anything more than a slight basis, in the affairs of the people of the time you visit is prohibited. When one of the tourists develops feelings for a woman in the town he is visiting he is faced with a dilemma that may force him to act contrary to this rule. As a companion tale this story works well and it investigates the background of Moore's tale that could not be delved into within the confines of a single novella. Silverberg states in his introduction to this book that his does not attempt to mimic the forst tale's writing style and that is true, the style here is classic Silverberg, but he does capture a great deal of the mood of the original. I am always a little wary when a classic of past years has a new story written as sequel, prequel or companion but this is one of the cases where worrying is not necessary, so just settle back and enjoy a good tale. |
