This is a book in two distinct parts. It starts with two reporters in a space craft nearing Pluto as part of their tour of the solar system and mankind's bases throughout writing articles informing people of what is out there. Nearing Pluto they discover a seeming derelict craft drifting through space. On inspecting it they discover a woman in cryogenic sleep with instructions on how to wake her. All this is told in the usual very enjoyable Simak way, without much feeling of dating despite the fifty plus years since the story was written. It then brings in an alien race who through thought communication tell this woman how she can travel to their home, and that they need our help. This is the point of the book that lost it a little for me. This is not to say it got bad, indeed I found the descriptions of the world they visit and those they find there to be excellent. The problem was the storyline to me had a very 40s/50s pulp feel and had not aged at all well. This is not a bad book but you would probably be advised to try other Simak's first. Go on, get a copy of 'City' or 'The Werewolf Principle'. |
