Roman Dragonesti's engagement to Shanna has created a lot of ripples, and not all of them good. First off, her father, a member of a psychic anti-vampire team is not at all thrilled that his daughter is marrying a vampire, and the master vamp, no less. Secondly, Roman's harem has to go, and that is where the fun begins. Charged with coming up with something new and exciting for the vampire television network, Darcy decides to hold auditions for a new master for the harem. The winner will get five lovely, clingy women and a lot of money so he can support them. As a twist, she allows mortals to compete with vampire males, thus creating an opening for Austin Erikson to enter, under the assumed name Adam Cartwright. His purpose is not to win more women than he knows what to do with, but to learn about vampires for the CIA and hopefully rescue Shanna. He did not plan on falling in love with a vampire, Darcy, and when he realizes he has, the ethical dilema is overwhelming. Darcy is not at all content being a vampire, but she does not want to love a man whose mission statement reads Vampires Must Die, but she can not help it either. She's also not copacetic with how much the harem likes her guy either. Yes, Shanna and Roman have made a mixed marriage work, but could she? Often times, sequels do not live up to the first book, but sometimes, they improve on the original. In this case, the latter proves true. Austin's real examination of his beliefs makes for fascinating reading. There is also plenty of humor and romance to go along with the deeper moments. Though I can not stand reality television, it has made for some interesting fiction, including this book. |
