Conceived during the Blood Moon ritual that freed his parents from their unholy bloodlust, Joss Hyde-White always knew that he was not an ordinary man. From his youth, he could shift into a wolf, but only recently have other vampire like symptoms begun to be displayed. Worried about what that might mean, he headed home to find his parents, Jon and Cassandra (from Blood Moon), only to find that they had moved on to avoid the speculations inherent in their inability to age. During his journey, he comes across a fallen carriage in which all the passengers but one young woman are apparently dead. He takes her home where she can be restored to health, but as it turns out, Cora Applegate wasn't exactly the only survivior. Her fellow passengers survived as undead and want her to join them. Not only that, but the vampire who has been his parents' enemy for thirty years has come back and will do whatever he can to corrupt Joss. A battle between light and darkness has come to Joss' doorstep, but he has allies, Cora, whom he has come to love, despite himself, and Milosh, the charming, enigmatic Gypsy who saved his parents long ago.

The continuing saga of the Hyde-White family remains fascinating as old and new concepts of vampire-dom blend into an intriguing legend. I particularly enjoyed re-encountering Milosh, who has to be one of the best secondary characters ever invented, the sort the terms Mercutio syndrome or the Fonz effect was coined to define.
