After being gambled away by her father, Lady Rebecca flees, determined to find refuge in a convent, but a carriage accident alters her plans, and her life. She is rescued by an enigmatic nobleman, Count Klaus Lindegen. He seems to be surrounded by a halo, yet inspires anything but saintly feelings in Becca.

However, when she discovers he is not human, but an otherworldly being who must, thanks to his inherent nature, come to the mortal world and seduce a human woman then return to the fey lands. Becca is horrified enough to return to her home, still planning on escape. However, Klaus can not forget her, and loves her enough to consider renouncing his magical nature; because he is half human, he does have this option.

Other beings are less than happy and determined to stop this love from blooming. Therefore, Becca must rescue Klaus, even as he must rescue her. With so many against them, and such sacrifices demanded of them, at times this will seem to be an impossible love.

Though highly imaginative, this book does have one major drawback. From time to time, Becca is drawn into a waking dream abruptly, with no clear transition. That can be rather confusing. However, this is an intriguing fairy tale that makes good use of tried and true plot devices in original ways.
