This is Harry Turtledove's sequel to L. Sprague de Camp's classic novella 'The Wheels of If' and is presented here doubled with that story. We pick up the story of Allister Park some time after the end of de Camp's tale with Park working in his new role of Judge to the International Court. Park is sent to attempt to prevent war between two of the nations of this alternate earth's equivalent of the Americas. The dispute is between the Incan Empire (never having fallen in this reality) and the Moslem settlements in the Amazon region. Turtledove has written this tale in a very sympathetic manner to de Camp's original. The writing style merges so smoothly with the original tale, that despite the fifty years between this and the original and the different authors, they might be two halves of a single work. The characters talk and behave the same as in the first story, and the world is developed further whilst remaining true to de Camp's. The only downside I could see for this story lies with the fact that Turtledove is, to me, more suited to the novel length for fiction. This story seems to conclude in a more abrupt manner than its setup would suit, a little longer format would tell this the better. This is not a major criticism, indeed I prefer this to long overly descriptive novels that bulk out a thin plot with excessive mood and scene setting. |
