Elizabeth Vaughan's Warsworn is the sequel to wonderful novel Warprize and has very successfully lived up to the expectations created by Warprize. Warsworn picks up immediately at the end of Warprize and takes us right back to Lara and Keir's world. Lara has chosen to follow Kier as Warprize rather than remain as Queen of Xy, in order to unite the Firelanders and the Xylanders, hopefully in peace. The return trip has some twists, some political and some personal esp when the Firelanders arrive at a closed fort and have rocks and arrows fired at them. It takes a bit of perseverance on Lara's part to discover that the arrows were intended as a warning and deterrent not attack and that the fort was protecting the Firelanders from a virulent plague. Even though Keir forbids Lara, she is a healer and her oath to help those in need supersedes her royal status or Kier's orders. When Lara come down with the plague, her remaining guard returns her to Kier's care. He's sent the arm on ahead and remained back, but even their precautions are too late and the entire army begins to sicken, adding more fire to Keir's political opponent. When Kier sickens, Lara is forced to realize that her concern for him is so deep that if he succumbs then she will chose to follow. With political machinations and deadly illness, Lara and Keir face yet another test of their love and can only hope that stubbornness and love will see them through this test. This book is a wonderful read, the characters are intriguing, engaging and very well written. This is the kind of book you can't put down but don't want to end and will pick up the next volume simply because you have to see what happens next. |
