The story is set in two centuries. In the 20th it concerns Lisa, a singer in a heavy metal group. In the 17th, Elizabeth is a widow, a herbalist, a witch? The two woman are inextricably linked and both lives become more and more entwined in murder, mystery, sorcery and evil.

Plot
An unusual, compelling plot, alternating in centuries. It is a good solid idea, and the descriptions invoke rich mental images with the author's excellent descriptions moving the plot forward. All events are well-set and wonderfully in context. The author manages to convey the story without resorting to graphic descriptions of evil or gore, but in a use of sufficient detail to allow the user to make the best use of imagination.

Characters
Many characters are duplicated in both centuries. They are all very well described, the author using language and conditions suitable to their eras.

General
A highly entertaining novel with good prose, excellent characterisation and descriptions. It is very chilling in places and reminiscent of Salem witch trial stories. I found this novel near impossible to put down – it is a good book for reading on a dark rainy night.
