When Jeff French starts his new job as an ambulance driver for the county morgue he hopes it will be the start of a new life. Even the thought of working the graveyard shift doesn't bother him. But when he suspects that his fellow driver, Phil, is taking souvenirs from their "customers" he doesn't want to believe his eyes. However, the red stain that seems have appeared on the outside of Phil's pocket tells Jeff that his suspicions may be correct. Plucking up courage he challenges Phil about his gruesome hobby he discovers a secret that he could never have imagined. For Phil has discovered that by using these personal items taken from the corpses he is able to hear the dead. What he hears inspires him to create a series of unique paintings. But the items themselves have enabled him to create his masterpiece – Metamorpho. Art & Becoming is a rather creepy little story. Jeff, the fledgling ambulance driver starts off just looking for a new start in life. When he meets Phil, his fellow driver, he just wants to learn the ropes but as he gets to know Phil better you, the reader, find out things that maybe you'd rather not know... The length of this novella certainly gives the author a challenge. How do you create an atmosphere and tell a complex story in a mere 105 pages? This is a challenge that would defeat many authors – some can write stories within this format but many cannot. Luckily, Williams is one of the former. Not only does he create an intense, eerie story he paces it perfectly to make the best use of every page. As I began to read Art & Becoming I hoped that the compelling story-telling wouldn't be let down by a weak ending. I was not disappointed. In fact the story panned out in a way that I could not have predicted. Woah! |
