Before I say anything that may make you think otherwise, this is a reasonably good book. The problem I have with it is that other Robert Charles Wilson books are very good indeed. This is the story of mankind's attempts to explore a planet (Isis) on which every organism is toxic to humans. So they send in a woman whose genetic makeup has been engineered to make her more resistant to the organisms on Isis. There are some good parts on the engineering struggle to keep toxins out of the station and on the effects of these on people infected, but as a whole I wanted more from an author I consider to be amongst my favourites. This is not a book to avoid, far from it. But I would start on one of the others, maybe Darwinia or Mysterium. |
