Recently, I was presented with the opportunity to read author Sean Wright's newest novel, DARK TALES OF TIME AND SPACE, just released by the British Publisher Crowswing Books. When I was contacted by the publisher, I welcomed the chance to review the work of this talented and highly praised author. After finishing this book, I found that my anticipation was well founded. DARK TALES OF TIME AND SPACE is an interesting work, a tale of a young man's journey through the tumultuous uncertainty that lies between our life here on Earth and the other side of death. It is told at a rapid pace and bridges the often vague gap dividing the reality of our lives on this planet and our perceptions of what awaits us on the other side. Most of us have some vision of heaven or hell and expect to end up in one of those places once this life passes, but this book addresses the rough road that we must take as souls before we get to our ultimate eternal destination. Joey Steffano is a phenomenally successful young musician, known the world over for his blunt and forceful lyrics and his stage presence. Selling out show after show, the young man, still a boy, allows this tremendous wave of success to take him on the ride of his life. However, one young "fan" at one of his performances has other plans for Steffano's career. Hurling a small yet very sharp metal object at the rock star from his place in the crowd, the demented concert goer succeeds in bringing a vicious and crashing end to the life of the performer on stage. In an instant, the life spark that is Joey Steffano, born Joey White, flickers and goes out... But all is not over...not by a long shot. Joey "awakes" to find himself riding a train, not your normal run of the mill type of train, mind you, but a very strange train. He has only fuzzy memories of what has brought him to this point and immediately has trouble believing the peculiar events that begin to take place. From this point on, Joey embarks on a journey of self realization and self fulfillment that prepares his essence for the next phase of his existence Refreshing and different, DARK TALES OF TIME AND SPACE follows this young man, who in life had everything he could ever want but whose personal life was in a veritable shambles, and lets the reader see inside the complicated person that he was. Through an altercation with his "darker self", a physical manifestation of his alter ego—a character known as Crack Boy, and Joey's interaction with several memorable characters, this book does a good job of filling in the mysterious blanks of what might lie beyond this plane of our reality. It also made me look deep down inside myself, to examine my inner being, and see if I could identify any similarities between what I found there and the two halves that made up Joey Steffano. An interesting story and a quick read at only 150 pages, I greatly enjoyed DARK TALES OF TIME AND SPACE and look forward to more of Sean Wright's work. |
