School's Out is a collection of short stories. Some are SF, some Fantasy and some are even horror. All are very original. In 'Connections', by Matt Horgan, life almost entirely exists Virtually. School lessons are received via "earbuds", small devices embedded in the ear. Only the poorest families don't have earbuds. Their children are forced to go to Real Camp, places reputed to be run by cults such as the Scouts! During "Hell Week at Grant-Williams High" (Vera Nazarian) the pupils have more to contend with than the examinations – the teachers are absolute monsters! Only Emily knows the secret of surviving Hell Week and if her little brother, Jimmy, doesn't pay attention then he will find him self in serious trouble! And, in "The Universe at the Bottom of a Cereal Box", by Amy Sterling Casil, Shellie finds a prize in the bottom of the cereal box – an Imperial Wormhole Key Ring. Minutes later she finds herself transported to a different dimension where she is the unwilling quarry in an alien game of persuit. School's Out is a nice little collection of stories that would be ideal for young-adult readers. Some of the stories did read a little like episodes of Buffy but they are enjoyable non-the-less. There are some good original ideas and the writing covers a variety of styles. It is true to say that no two stories are the same. I particularly enjoyed "Oh-oh", by John C Bodin and Ron Collins where an alien undercover agent tries to prevent a group of crooks stealing billions of universals (cash) by fixing a particular sporting event. |
