In 1925, Christine Campbell edited the first of the "Not at Night" series of anthologies. Following on from this she edited a further eleven volumes during the 20's and 30's. The series had predominantly comprised of stories previously published in the magazine "Weird Tales". In the case of this latest edition, Stephen Jones approached contemporary horror authors for favourite stories. Contributors to the volume include Neil Gaiman, Ramsey Campbell, Tim Lebbon, Brian Lumley and Kim Newman. All tales in this anthology are of a high standard but there are stories that deserve particular mention. These include: "Invasion From Inferno" by Hugh B. Cave. In this tale a small American town is infested by spiders. The creatures attack children and livestock and are destroying crops. Unless they are stopped they will certainly destroy the whole town. When looking for someone to blame for the infestation the townspeople turn against their new schoolmistress, Arachne Reid. Spiderwoman. "The Viaduct" by Brian Lumley. Having taunted a local handicapped boy, two young lads dare each other to cross a deep valley hanging from the underside of a viaduct. When they start to tire, part way across, they decide to climb up onto the main walkway of the viaduct. But things aren't always that easy. And my favourite tale, "The Unfortunate" by Tim Lebbon. When Adam survived the crash of the 747 everyone told him how fortunate he was. However, Adam knew it was more than just luck. After the aeroplane crashed into the ocean he was dragged down to the seabed. As the bodies of the other passengers float past he saw strange creatures coming towards him. The creatures offer him life but at a price. So, what is survival worth? What price is too high? This collection is superb. Each of the stories is so very different from the next. It is an anthology of stories by some of the best authors of the genre and, encouragingly, it is described as 'The First Volume of the New "Not at Night" Series'. I look forward to reading the next volume. |
