With most shows I would worry about reading a quotes book, but this is Buffy and so many of these quotes have come from the scripting of Joss Whedon, a man who possesses one of the most wonderfully inventive touches when it comes to character dialog. He has always had the knack of forming the kinds of phrases that make you do a double take when you watch the shows, they just make you think "Did he really just say that?" or "What was that again?" And so this book is not as bad as you might think – well okay, if you are a fan of the show then this is not as bad as it might sound. But given that this is aimed at fans of the show I guess if you aren't then... The book itself is organised into a series of themed chapters, grouped into two main sections – quotes by individuals - starting with Buffy herself, then Giles and on through the Scooby Gang, and associated regular irregular characters. And then secondly the quotes are organised by general theme – covering love, death, friendship, evil, war, the Big Bad and so on. Okay, this is not a book that you'll be all be all that likely to read in the same way you would a novel. It's much more likely to be a book you will delve into from time to time, skim through a page or two to pass a couple of pleasant moments. And in being this kind of book it's one that could well have repeat appeal. |
