There have been a number of fires breaking out around Quentaris. Initially it was thought to be coincidence but soon it becomes clear that the fires are being set deliberately, but why, and by whom? Nisha Farsight has spent her whole life in Quentaris, ever since her parents were killed during an expedition into the rift caves. Although both of her parents were fire-magicians, Nisha does not believe she shares their talent. One day, after following an adventurer to the mouth of the rift caves she meets up with a young minstrel, Talliganzi. Together the two youngsters set out to find who is behind the mysterious arson attacks and to try and prevent an invasion by the vicious, insect-like Zolka, a creature that comes from a land beyond the rift caves. Soon they uncover a complex web of intrigue and deceit. Quentaris in Flames is the first book in The Quentaris Chronicles and quickly introduces us to the fascinating and complex world of Quentaris where magic still exists and the Rift Caves are an ominous gateway to other lands through which many an adventurer has passed but few return. From the very first page Michael Pryor draws you deep into Quentaris with no gentle introduction. In fact quite the opposite. You immediately find yourself in the middle of the action with the main characters fighting to control yet another arson attack. Quentaris in Flames is a well written, entertaining story aimed at the young adult reader. I found it completely compelling and, indeed, I completed it in one sitting. I would think this series of books ideally aimed at the reader who has completed the Harry Potter stories and now fancies something a little more "grown-up". Good harmless fun – a real adventure story. |
