Rad de La'rel is a street urchin working as a night watch, ready to ring the bells should the rift prates attack. He would like to be accepted as a member of the Guides Guild, like his ancestor Nathine but unfortunately it seems that her abilities have not been passed on to him. So this leaves him in the unenviable position of being without a guild and therefore classless.

His only hope seems to be to gain membership of the Thieves Guild. At least this would allow him to make a reasonable living. There are 3 ways of being awarded membership. Heredity, Nomination by another guild member or, least likely, you can earn your way in. However, how can he earn membership of the Thieves guild when any non-guild member stealing is an offence against the very guild he wants to join?

When he finds himself the sole witness to a fresh attack by the rift pirates, Rad seizes the opportunity to steal something valuable from the pirates' ship – surely this must gain him guild membership? Having stolen a mysterious map of the rift caves Rad finds himself pursued by a number of parties all of whom are intent on taking the map.

Swords of Quentaris is the second book in the Quentaris Chronicles and tells the story of Rad de La'rel, a would-be guide. As with the first book the novel brings the reader right into the action. Within the first chapter you find yourself in the middle of a pirate attack. Once the attack is foiled you follow the steps of Rad as he tries to evade capture. At the same time he is trying to decipher the true meaning of the strange map he has stolen from the pirates.

The story continues at a compelling pace and encourages the reader to turn page after page until the book is finished.

A superb fantasy tale with technicolour characters and a well-rounded storyline.
