A year after an experiment in their Metropolis lab killed Janice Brucker's husband George, Janice is tempted back to work by an offer from Lex Luthor to work for him at his Smallville operation. Together with her daughter Ginger she moves into a previously deserted farmhouse near Clark and Lana's homes. This house is rumoured to be haunted and the two soon start to encounter strange ghostlike activity in their new home. Clark's vision allows him to see something strange in the basement of the house – a green glow he normally associates with Kryptonite but one that is not static, appearing sometimes and then disappearing. This is a wonderfully easy read. I had never watched an episode of the Smallville TV series before I read the novelisation of the first episode and have only watched two as of now. This, however, caused me no problems at all when it came to reading this book. Okay so part of this is probably due to the fact that Superman has entered the culture of the English-speaking world. Not having watched the show is certainly not cause to skip this novel. Also out of the many authors of TV tie in novels Nancy Holder is one of the best. I've read her books before in the Highlander or Buffy universe and they have been consistently good. And this is certainly no exception to her high standard of output. The characters match up well to the series, the plot is involving and has twists along the way and the ending is certainly not predictable from early on in the tale. |
